On Saturday (27 February), the leaders of the Labour Party, Scottish National Party, and Plaid Cymru will mount the same stage in Trafalgar Square to speak to tens of thousands of people gathered to say 'stop Trident'.
Jeremy Corbyn's office confirmed today (24 February)that he would address the anti-nuclear weapons rally, joining Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood. The Green MP Caroline Lucas will also join the mass rally alongside a star-studded line-up including actress Vanessa Redgrave.
The Stop Trident demonstration, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), represents a resurgent movement, bringing together 27 national organisations, from trade unions to faith groups, civil society organisations and political parties.
Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary, said: "It's clear the mainstream party consensus on Trident and nuclear weapons is breaking down before our very eyes.
"Part of this transformation is about having a proper debate for the first time on how to tackle the real security challenges we face. That's why we've seen politicians like David Blunkett, Keith Vaz and others change their minds about Trident in recent weeks.
"When the arguments are heard in the open, it soon becomes clear that spending an extortionate £183 billion on Trident is bad for our security, bad for jobs creation, and bad for society as a whole when it's draining resources from struggling public services."
