Quakers in Britain in association with Luath Press have published a new book The Truth about Trident: Disarming the Nuclear Argument. With more than 15,000 nuclear warheads stockpiled worldwide, Timmon Wallis, who works for Quaker Peace and Social Witness and Christian CND, explores the arguments for retaining Trident with a critical eye to get to the real truth.
Quakers in Britain have long protested against the use of nuclear weapons. Helen Drewery, General Secretary of Quaker Peace and Social Witness said: “Quakers in Britain say that a gospel of love cannot be defended by the threatened annihilation of millions of innocent people. It can never be right to use these ghastly weapons at any time, whether first, or as unthinkable retaliation after we ourselves are doomed. This book is timely, ahead of the hugely controversial vote in parliament this year."
Associated with the book, there are workshop-based training-days, sharpening skills to talk about Trident. 'Sowing the Seeds of Peace: Telling the Truth about Trident' workshops are organised by Christian CND, Quaker Peace and Social Witness, Fellowship of Reconciliation, and Pax Christi. They include:
- 14 May: Central Hall, Westminster. 'Getting your peace message into the mainstream media'.
- 18 June: Friends House (opposite Euston Station). 'Making the best use of social media'.
Each runs from 10.30am to 5.00pm. The cost is £10 and concessions £5.
